What is a Dedicated IP Address?
A dedicated IP address is a unique IP assigned exclusively to your server or account — not shared with any other website or user.
A dedicated IP address is an IP address assigned to a single account, server, or user — rather than shared among hundreds of websites on the same machine.
On shared hosting, dozens to hundreds of websites typically share a single IP address. This is transparent to end users but has operational implications: if one site on the IP is blacklisted for spam or abuse, it can affect email deliverability for all other sites sharing that IP.
Why a Dedicated IP Matters for Security
A dedicated IP enables a class of security controls that are impossible with a shared IP:
- IP whitelisting at the firewall level: you can configure iptables, UFW, or your cloud provider's security group to accept connections on sensitive ports (SSH :22, admin panels) only from your dedicated IP — dropping all other traffic before it ever reaches your application.
- WAF rules: Web Application Firewalls like Cloudflare, ModSecurity, or AWS WAF can enforce "allow only from X.X.X.X" rules on specific URL paths.
- Application-level guards: Your PHP, Node, or Python application can check the request IP and return a 403 before executing any authentication logic.
VPN with Dedicated IP
If you don't control the server (shared hosting, third-party SaaS), a VPN with a dedicated IP — offered by providers like NordVPN — gives you a fixed source IP you can whitelist on any system that accepts IP-based access control.
