What is a CDN?

A CDN (Content Delivery Network) is a globally distributed network of servers that caches copies of your website's static content — images, CSS, JavaScript — and delivers them from the server geographically closest to each visitor, reducing load times significantly.

What is a CDN?

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a geographically distributed network of servers — called Points of Presence (PoPs) — that work together to deliver web content faster by serving it from a location physically close to the user requesting it.

The Problem CDNs Solve

When a visitor in Dubai loads a website hosted in New York, the data has to travel across the Atlantic and back — a round trip of thousands of miles. Even at the speed of light through fiber-optic cables, this physical distance introduces measurable delay (latency). A CDN eliminates most of that delay by caching your content on servers worldwide and serving it from whichever PoP is nearest to the visitor.

What a CDN Caches

  • Images (JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG)
  • CSS and JavaScript files
  • Web fonts
  • Videos and audio files
  • HTML pages (for fully static sites or with edge caching)

Dynamic content (personalized pages, shopping carts, user dashboards) is typically not cached by a CDN and still originates from your main server.

Benefits of Using a CDN

  • Faster load times — Static assets are served from nearby servers, cutting latency by 40–70% for distant visitors.
  • Reduced server load — Your origin server handles fewer requests since the CDN serves static files directly.
  • DDoS protection — CDNs absorb and filter large volumes of malicious traffic before it reaches your server.
  • Better Core Web Vitals — Faster asset delivery directly improves LCP and FCP scores.
  • Higher availability — If your origin server goes down, the CDN can often continue serving cached content.

Popular CDN Providers

Cloudflare (free tier available), Amazon CloudFront, Fastly, KeyCDN, and BunnyCDN are the most widely used. Many hosting providers include Cloudflare CDN integration at no extra cost.
